Boumsong has been linked with a January exit from Juventus after failing to force his way into Claudio Ranieri’s plans on a regular basis.

The former Newcastle United centre-half was tipped for a return to the Premier League, but he now appears poised to join Lyon.

The French champions’ president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed talks are underway to sign Boumsong as a replacement for the injured Cleber Anderson.

    Advanced

“We are well advanced with a French defender who plays for Juventus, but as things are not signed, we can not confirm this,” Aulas told the club’s official website.

“I hope that this matter is concluded quickly, early this week.”

Meanwhile, Juve coach Ranieri has hinted he could bring in a defender, with Lyon full-back Anthony Reveillere linked with a move to Turin.

Ranieri said: “We are talking about a defender. My job is thinking only about things on the pitch as there are other people who are working on the market situation.

“But I’m confident and I’m convinced we will do something.”

Tiago looks set to leave Turin and Tottenham are keen to secure his signature if they can strike a deal with Juve.

And Ranieri admits he is mystified by Tiago’s failure to make an impact following his £10million switch from Lyon last summer.

“Certainly we have made mistakes but in general our purchases from the summer have been positive,” Ranieri explained to Radio Anch’io.

“Although it is undeniable that some of the players have paid a price for the burden on someone who puts on the Bianconeri shirt.

“And my biggest concern has been Tiago, a player I have followed since he played in Portugal.

“He has all the characteristics to be a great player and I cannot understand why he is unable to make the breakthrough here.”

    Sissoko

Tiago has started just four games in Serie A for Juve this term and his chances of a place in the first team will be made even more difficult with Sissoko’s likely arrival.

Juventus had been leading the chase for the Liverpool star – but their interest appeared to cool when their president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli said his club would not make any signings in January.

However, Ranieri has confirmed that he wants Sissoko as soon as possible.

“Sissoko could arrive,” said the former Chelsea boss

“He is a good player that could fit into the pattern of our team.”

The central defender joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer from Colo-Colo in a deal worth around £8million – making him the most expensive Chilean ever.

Vidal is happy with how things are going despite the fact he is still struggling to learn the language.

    Language barrier

“Besides that I still have to have an interpreter in Germany, I am completely adapted to my new life,” he told La Tercera.

“I should keep on going to my German lessons but with all the activity that we have with the team it’s impossible.

“The language is the most difficult thing in Germany. Anyway I know some words and I understand when someone talks to me.

“I am happy because these first six months at Leverkusen have been good. In the beginning it was hard cause of obvious reasons but then I started to play and everything was a little bit easier.

“I have my place in the team and that is important because it’s not easy, I have played well.

“I arrived in Germany with a very big expectation. Coming from a league like the Chilean to the German, which is one of the best in the world, wasn’t an easy task.”

The Gunners crashed out of the competition after they went down 5-1 at White Hart Lane, with the tie finishing 6-2 on aggregate.

Wenger has blamed his side’s naivety, while admitting that will have to wait and see as to whether the heavy defeat will affect his players in the forthcoming fixtures.

“I feel defeat is painful. Overall, I think everything went against us tonight and we were a bit naive,”

Liverpool lie in fifth place after Monday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield – 14 points off leaders Manchester United.

The England international admits that there is no denying that the current situation is unacceptable for a club of Liverpool’s stature.

“For a club like Liverpool the gap is undoubtedly too big and that’s a major disappointment,” Crouch told the club’s official website.

“I think when we started this season we all felt we were going to mount a serious challenge but that doesn’t seem to be the case at the minute.

The 22-year-old right-back has penned a three-and-a-half year deal with The Black Cats, and becomes Roy Keane’s third capture of the January transfer window.

Keane told the club’s official website: “We needed to strengthen our defence and Phil is a good addition to the squad.”

Bardsley, who made eight Premier League appearances for United, added: “Sunderland have a fantastic manager who has given me the chance to come here and play.

“I’m delighted; it’s a massive club and a good opportunity.”

Bardsley has previously had loan spells with Sheffield United, Royal Antwerp, Burnley and Rangers.

The Danish international has penned a three-year deal at Craven Cottage after sealing the formalities of the move.

“I am pleased that the two clubs have been able to reach an agreement to enable me to sign for Fulham,” he told the club’s website.

“I enjoyed my time at Werder Bremen and I am now excited by a new challenge that awaits me. I look forward to playing well for Fulham and competing in the Premier League.”

Middlesbrough are hoping to complete a deal for the Brazilian, but the issue has been clouded after AZ claimed they had an agreement with the player – currently with Heerenveen.

An independent panel sat last week and confirmed that Alves had in reality two contracts – one with Heerenveen and the other with AZ.

The panel is due to meet again this Wednesday to try and conclude the issue, which both Boro and Heerenveen hope will see the player switching to The Riverside – whilst AZ hope Alves will be told to join them, even though the player does not want to.

However, now Alves’ lawyer has launched a counter-claim with the KNVB, stating that AZ’s contract with the player is not legal and should be annulled.

Alves did sign an agreement with AZ in December, but neither his agent or lawyer was present and Heerenveen also refused to sign and finalise the deal.

Now Pim de Vos – Alves’ lawyer – says that because nobody else signed the agreement, it is not legal under Fifa and Uefa law.

“The Fifa and Uefa regulations write that at the signing of a contract agents with a licence and a lawyer have to be present. That hasn’t been the case. ‘It takes to two salsa’, as they say, and in this case that obviously has not been the case,” De Vos told the Leeuwarder Courant.

Lampard has been out of action since picking up the thigh injury in the Boxing Day draw with Aston Villa.

The England international had targeted a return against Everton in the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final, but he will now miss the trip to Goodison Park after aggravating the injury in training.

Blues boss Avram Grant confirmed Lampard could be sidelined for a further two weeks.

“All I can say about his injury is that he is not available for the moment but we hope he will be soon as possible,” said Grant.

Bentley has been in fine form this season and reports have suggested that Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan is interested in signing the midfielder.

However, Williams maintains that he has not yet been contacted by Newcastle and has quashed talk of a sale.

He has also revealed that discussions over a new deal for Bentley are moving ahead smoothly.

“Our position is clear, David Bentley is not for sale,” Williams told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“We’ve not heard anything from Newcastle or anyone else and we wouldn’t welcome any interest.

“We stated recently that we wanted to sit down with David and his agent to discuss a new deal.

“He only signed a new contract in the recent past but we felt that his performances this season were such that it warranted us to sit down with him and discuss a new contract and talks are progressing well.”

While the North East has been taken over by Keegan-mania over the last week, Martins has been a spectator from afar as he is away at the African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

That has not, though, stopped him from voicing his opinion on what he perceives to be a shrewd appointment on Newcastle’s part.

“Keegan knows the Premier League well so I think he is the right man for the job,” the Nigerian told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

“I have heard about the option of Alan Shearer returning, but the players do not have a say on this. It is up to the board. I just want what is best for the club.

“I believe Newcastle have the players to fight for a place in the Uefa Cup and not worry about relegation.”

Portsmouth have been linked with the Czech Republic midfielder, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury and has made just five substitute appearances all season.

However, O’Neill insists Pompey have yet to make an offer and has ruled out the possibility of Berger going anywhere.

“Portsmouth have not come in for Patrik Berger – Patrik Berger has come in for Patrik Berger,” O’Neill told the Birmingham Mail.

“Portsmouth have still got to make contact with me about wanting to take him officially.

“Patrik can’t go anywhere at the moment because he’s injured.”

Villa have been quiet in the transfer window so far and O’Neill admits it has been a frustrating time.

“It’s a particularly difficult market out there because everyone is chasing the same people,” O’Neill added.

As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week Fulham made a move for the Gabon international as they look to bolster their attacking options.

The 30-year-old joined Rangers from Lens last August for around £1million and has scored eight goals in 17 SPL matches.

“We’ve had an enquiry from Fulham,” said Smith. “We’ve turned that down and there’s been nothing else since then.”

Cousin is believed to have a release clause in his contract allowing him to leave for £3million but Smith was refusing to get involved in the player’s contract.

“I don’t get involved in that aspect of things,” added Smith. “If there is a clause we’ve not reached that level yet.”

Meanwhile, Smith has rejected reports linking Tottenham with a new bid for Alan Hutton.

Spurs had a bid for the Scottish international accepted earlier this month, only for the player to snub their overtures and stay at Ibrox.

However, widespread reports on Tuesday suggested Spurs were preparing to rekindle their interest in the full-back, but Smith says there have been no fresh developments.

“There’s nothing on that one, nothing has changed,” concluded Smith.
