who made the first computer virus in the world? how dangerous was it?
Virus are here to stay. From humble beginning as mischievous programs designed to perplex and bug fello computer users, today they are a part of the world of computer crime. Viruses owe their origins to a wide variety of creators – hackers and nerds out to beat the system, disgruntled employees and glory seekers.
In 1949, John von Neumann propounded the concept of self replicating programs. The first such program was developed at the AT & T Bell Labs as a recreational game called Core Wars. The game consisted of two players developing programs to destroy the opponent’s program. The term ‘virus’ originated from the science fiction story ‘When Harlie was Out’ by David Gerold. Here, a program called ‘Virus’ rings up telephones randomly till it is able to infiltrate the computer system.
In current uage, a computer virus (Vital Information Resources Under Siege) is a software program which has the ability to attach itself or infect other programs as well as replicate itself without the users knowledge or intention, like its biological counterpart.
